Deck Repair is a common need here in Bend Oregon. The intense sun, and bitter cold have a severe effect on your old decks appearance and function. Here I will go over the process of getting your old weathered deck back into its original beautiful younger self again.
Nobody likes getting slivers in their feet... Nobody.
1. Fix any structural problems. Often time the areas of the deck that have contact with the ground are susceptible to rot, Because it is so dry here in Bend it is not too much of a problem but it is always wise to check. Any boards that are too far gone will have to be replaced. All nails that are poking up will have to be pounded in or replaced.
2. Wash it. Decks need to be washed once a year, especially with bends extreme weather. You can get deck wash for pretty cheap at Home Depot. The hard part is scrubbing, you will have to work the wash into the wood and that takes a good bit of gusto.
3. Stain. Once all necessary repairs have been made and its all cleaned up you are ready to add the deck stain. If you had to replace a few of your decks boards you should probably use a semitransparent stain to help blend the new and the old wood's color. It is much easier to spray the stain on rather than brushing or rolling. Save the brush for areas you couldn't reach with the sprayer. If you need multiple coats make sure to apply before the first coat dries or the wood will not absorb the next coat.
Voila, just like that your old weathered deck should look brand new or close to it. Well its not as easy as it sounds and requires a good bit of time. The effort is well worth it when your old ugly deck that you are afraid to walk on without some foot protection becomes a comfortable hang out to enjoy the beautiful outdoors here in Bend.
